Product Description THE MUSIC OF THE BEATLES AND THE VIETNAM WAR FORM THE BACKDROP FOR THE ROMANCE BETWEEN AN UPPER-CLASS AMERICAN GIRL AND A POOR LIVERPUDLIAN ARTIST.
Amazon.com Set in America during the Vietnam War, Across the Universe is a powerful love story set against a backdrop of political and social unrest: it's a story of soul-searching, self-doubt, and individual powerlessness cleverly conveyed through a multitude of Beatles songs. Like young adults all across America during the 1960's, Jude (Jim Sturgess), Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood), Max (Joe Anderson), Sadie (Dana Fuchs), Prudence (T.V. Carpio), and JoJo (Martin Luther) are in turmoil over the war; questioning their individual roles in the war effort and struggling to find a way to hold true to their beliefs while making a difference in the world. While love proves a powerful uniting force, its limitations become clear as relationships are strained and broken over individual perceptions of responsibility to cause and country. A fairly bizarre juxtaposition of extremely stylized, almost hallucinogenic scenes of swirling colors and reflections, highly choreographed dance segments, seemingly commonplace character interaction, and emotionally packed close-up footage of characters lost in contemplative song, this film imparts a good sense of the confusion and passion of the time and is at once powerful, invigorating, and disturbing. The film runs a bit long at 2-hours 11-minutes and several segments drag noticeably thanks to some incredibly slow song tempos. Warning: this production may change how you think about a favorite Beatles song forever. --Tami Horiuchi

Beautiful August 24, 2010 MarLo This is a well acted, well directed musical. I love this movie, if you like the Beatles and the '60s era you will love this movie.
across the universe August 19, 2010 charlie15 music is very good, liberals would love this movie, its very politically left, thats being mild. id rather leave polotics out of mu movies and music completely.
Across the Universe July 26, 2010 twjc134 Great company to work with, and the dvd was absolutely amazing - especially for a Beatles Fan!
You DON'T have to be a Beatles fan to like this July 25, 2010 J. Breese This was one of my favorites DVDs, and I just upgraded to the Blu-ray version which looks fantastic. First of all, I am a life-long fan of the Beatles' music, but believe me, if the movie sucks I don't care how good the music is, it still sucks. I actually avoided this movie because I hate it when other people try to perform their music, the same way I don't like tribute bands or Elvis impersonators, etc. Somewhere I saw the black soloist and choir from the movie performing their version of "Let It Be", and I was so blown away I decided to rent the movie. Each time I watch it I'm blown away again with the creative genius it took to make this; the story line is credible, you really care about the characters, and it's the ONLY time I've ever heard Beatles songs redone in a good way. While you don't have to be a fan to enjoy the movie, you might have to have lived through that decade to fully appreciate what the director succeeded in doing: taking a decade that has become almost a cliche and making it fresh through the music of just one band.
Incidentally, my grown son happened to drop by while this was on and was so intrigued he wanted to see it from the beginning. This is a guy who came up with Snoop Dog, Bob Marley and Tupac, to name a few of his favorites, and prefers typical "guy" movies (action, explosions, fighting, gangsters). He really liked this movie!
Others have given very thorough reviews so I won't. I just didn't want people to be scared away from trying this movie because of the reviewer who dismissed it as just a bunch of Beatles music and a nude scene. That couldn't be further from the truth, and in fact if you're not a fan of the Beatles you might just find you like their music the way these guys have done it. They did it that well.
This movie grows on you! July 11, 2010 Kathleen Warren After I rented this movie, I decided that it was a keeper. First of all I am from the generation that can truly relate to the music and the times of the sixties so it might have less appeal for someone younger or older. The Beatles music is very well used to tell the story, and I love the way it was sung. The music and the dialog are seamlessly intertwined so that you wonder if the music was written for the movie or the movie was written for the music. Most of the turmoil and issues of the sixties are fairly captured, and for me the movie brought back not only memories but almost-forgotten feelings about the events. It is well worth the time to check out some of the special features. And did I mention--watch it more than once!
