5 out of 5 stars The Big Gay Musical (2009)   July 5, 2010

First of all I probably need to warn people who usually don't like musicals: The Big Gay Musical is yes a musical and so you will have also plenty of songs and ballets, but it's also a drama/comedy, and so Adam and Steve on the stage, go back to be Paul and Eddie in their everyday life and the movie follows them in their pursuit of true love. And maybe it's necessary also another warning: this is not the love story between Paul and Eddie, they are too different and in too different stage of their life, and so what they are searching in a relationship is not the same thing. Paul is experienced and tired of a never ending string of one night stands; he wants to find Mr Right and he is willing to lower his standard to find him. Paul's story is probably the most interesting, and the little scene with Brent Corrigan who plays an hustler, is really nice. I have to make a remark to Paul thought, he is quite blind: he spends most of the movie with the wrong men when the right one was right there for him to catch.

Then there is Eddie's story; at the beginning of the movie Eddie is a virgin, but he will soon loose that "characteristic". Eddie's story is not of a guy searching true love, but more og a guy searching himself. In doing so, he does a lot of mistakes, but sincerely he is lucky.

I recommend The Big Gay Musical to two different target: if you like musicals, some of the songs in it are really good, and funny; if you like comedy and romance, again, this movie has both. Plus, even if low budget, the setting, the sound and all related things, are above the average you usually find in the indie productions.

A great film with handsome guys with a great story very romantic and lot of fun. I love the 2 main characters. Buy this film with no regret if you like clever and romantic gay film. Sorry for my english but i'm french. The blu ray disc is hd and more better than DVD. The songs are great like in musicals.

1 out of 5 stars Total Crap   June 16, 2010

I am blown away that this movie got anything above two stars. It just goes to show you that we really should always decide for ourselves when buying a movie. When it comes to gay-themed cinema especially. If you don't want to make a huge mistake and buy this piece of crap movie then I suggest you do what I did and watch it on Netflix or rent it before you buy.
The songs sucked, the singers were not great, the tongue-n-cheek humor was so lame I actually cringed. The men were kind of cute, but I couldn't find one I identified with or even liked.
Are there no talented gay men and women in Hollywood who make film or write movies?? (at least in the US, I find far more foreign gay film that I like or identify with than I do from the US) There are a number of gay-theme movies that I have watched or bought and thought "WOW...if only this had a bigger budget it could have been awesome!" So I buy the movie and enjoy it for what it for what it was, a great attempt. Generally a film just needed better editing, or more time to get the scene right, now and then it needed better actors or a better director. However, "The Big Gay Musical" is NOT one of them. IMO it's crap all the way around.

4 out of 5 stars musical review   May 31, 2010

If you like musicals, you might enjoy this one. The dancers are pretty good and the story line is not so bad either.

2 out of 5 stars Another half assed gay movie   May 28, 2010

There is one major plot hole in this movie. One that leaves the whole movie completely unresolved. In the film, the main character's boyfriend suddenly disappears because someone lied and told him that his boyfriend is HIV positive. The main character has no enemies so who did it? We never find out. And the main character never sees his boyfriend ever again. Instead, he decides he will become a slut and have sex with random people. Wow. In the end, he finds love with a new guy who we never get to know.

The movie revolves around a musical that sort of mocks Christians. That's not a way to get people to look at you with respect. The musical also depicts gay men as wing-wearing, skipping-prancing sissies. The one positive thing I can say about it is that some of them could actually sing pretty well.

Over all, this is another gay movie with a weak script and only furthers stereotypes.
