Product Description
True story of gay rights political activist Harvey Milk.

Amazon.com
When a famous person, like the nation's first openly gay male city supervisor, inspires an acclaimed book (The Mayor of Castro Street) and Oscar-winning documentary (The Times of Harvey Milk), a biopic can seem superfluous at best. Taking over from Oliver Stone and Bryan Singer, Gus Van Sant, whose previous picture was the more experimental Paranoid Park, directs with such grace, he renders the concern moot. Unlike Randy Shilts' biography, which begins at the beginning, Dustin Lance Black's script starts in 1972, just as Milk (Sean Penn, in a finely-wrought performance) and his boyfriend, Scott (James Franco, equally good), move from New York to San Francisco. Milk opens a camera shop on the Castro that becomes a safe haven for victims of discrimination, convincing him to enter politics. With each race he runs, Harvey's relationship with Scott unravels further. Finally, he wins, and the real battle begins as Milk takes on Proposition 6, which denies equal rights to homosexuals. He does what he can to rally politicians, like George Moscone (Victor Garber) and Dan White (Josh Brolin). While the mayor is willing, the conservative board member has reservations, and after Milk fails to back one of White’s pet projects, the die is cast, leading to the murder of two beloved figures. If Van Sant’s film captures Harvey in all his complexities (he was, for instance, a very funny man), Milk also serves as an enticement to grass-roots activism, showing how one regular guy elevated everyone around him, notably Cleve Jones (Emile Hirsch), the ex-street hustler who created the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial. Released in the wake of Proposition 8, California’s anti-gay marriage amendment, Milk is inspirational in the best way: one person can and did make a difference, but the struggle is far from over. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars We need films like this!   July 25, 2010
queermovies
We need people like Harvey Milk! And we need films like this! The battle for equal rights hasn't nearly been won. Just look at Proposition 8, which was passed in November 2008 and provided that "only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California." So, in other words, homosexual people are still not allowed to marry in California (or in most U.S. states). So we still need to fight for Civil Rights, just like Sean Penn in his role as Harvey Milk says at the end of the film: "I ask for the movement to continue. Because it's not about personal gain, not about ego, not about power... it's about the us's out there. Not only gays, but the Blacks, the Asians, the disabled, the seniors, the us's." A mainstream film like Milk surely helps the movement and this film has not disappointed us at all.

4 out of 5 stars very intimate and good film about the destructive power of fear and hate   July 22, 2010

i think the thing this film does so brilliantly is keep an intimate focus on the human being Harvey Milk . i'm often at odds with Sean Penn as a politically out-spoken actor . i do , however , always enjoy the diverse people he brings to life on film . here's hoping that the subject matter will not keep other strait and thoughtful people from renting or owning this excellent film . another feather in Josh Brolin's cap as well . strongely recommended .

5 out of 5 stars A class of Milk   July 14, 2010

Great movie with Sean Penn and a bunch of other well-known actors acting as gay '70s men. Judd Hirsch is in it too, getting away from his Speed Racer thing and a bit closer to his Dogtown thing. Josh Brolin is fantastic as Harvey Milk's assassin Dan White. It was pretty trippy finding out about the weird world of Anita Bryant and her goofy anti-gay campaigners, but this is what the hate of the 60s and 70s was all about. Great zeitgeist.

5 out of 5 stars Meet Harvey Milk   July 14, 2010
Steven McKinney (Arkansas, USA)
When I first bought this movie I was expecting a humourous movie about a slightly-retarded man on a farm that went into politics. Sean Penn was brilliant in "I Am Sam" so I thought I'd give this a spin. Oddly, nothing to do with cows or even him working at an ice cream store. Rather it's about him being a homosexual politician that likes to have homosexual sex with other homosexual men. I'm no prude, but I thought that it was a little bit odd to see someone who was mentally retarded kiss a man.

Usually I'd give this movie a poor review because it isn't funny at all like "I Am Sam" was or have a clever title that expresses the main focus on the movie. But this was a powerful film showing how politics can turn the average person into trouble. The second act where Harvey trains in karate is much better, honestly and leads up to a powerful scene where Milk finally confronts his ninja captive only to fall.

5 out of 5 stars Milk (2008)   July 5, 2010

I wondered a lot if including Milk in my Gay Romance Movie list. Problem is that Milk is way more than a romance movie, it's a bio, an homage and part of history. But when I saw it, I really appreciated that the director didn't make a perfect hero out of Milk, instead we can see the man, with his problem and also his insecurities. With his mistakes, and also with his lies. And with his men, the one who is probably the one who he really loved, but also friends and lovers and all in between. So yes, I think Milk is right in this Gay Romance Movie list.
