Letters to Juliet succeeds in being just what it's meant to be, a feel-good romantic comedy about love lost and love found, in which love triumphs in the face of cynicism. Inspired by the book of the same name, and filmed against the beautiful backdrop of Verona, Italy, the movie tells the story of how troubled young women seek advice from Shakespeare's Juliet by leaving letters tacked to a wall, where they are carefully answered by Juliet's self-appointed "secretaries." One such note is found 50 years later by Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), a young American woman who is soon to be married and who yearns to become a writer. Her heartfelt answer to the letter serves as a catalyst for an epic romantic journey that will span continents and generations. The success of the film lies in the powerful interaction between the wistfully romantic and fully mature author of the letter, Claire (Vanessa Redgrave); the romantically idealistic Sophie; and Claire's overly pragmatic, downright cynical grandson Charlie (Christopher Egan), who grudgingly accompanies his grandmother on what he deems an insane quest to Verona to find her long lost love, Lorenzo. The filmmakers, writers, and actors all capitalize well on the comic possibilities of the situation, and there are more than a few good chuckles to be had at the absurdity of the interactions between these three very different characters, as they experience everything from hope and longing to disappointment and unexpected fulfillment. In the end, each character grows and changes profoundly as a result of their shared journey. I saw this movie with my Mom and sister-in-law. They loved it. I didn't hate it, but it was quite forgettable, other than for the always-commanding presence of Vanessa Redgrave. I hate to sound like a Neanderthal, but if you're a female, you'll probably like it.

My husband and I saw the move a couple of months ago and I was afraid it would be a total "chick flick" - but the tenderness of the love story wrapped itself around our hearts. We lived in Italy for two years, our daughter was born 30 miles from Verona in Vicenzia - so this movie with all Italian beauty brought back the magic of our lives many years ago.

This was a truly classic and awe inspiring film! The gorgeous scenery, the clever plot, the humor and the excitement all combine to fill your heart with joy and delight in every minute you spend watching this! This movie is a classic tale that will win your heart by showing you historic and unique views of the Italian countryside and inspiring you with sweet and hilarious romance. I think that this is a educational movie because it includes both Italian and British cultures to help expand your mind about our world! It will also show you that everyone is charming and unique no matter what misfortunes they have endured! Please buy this movie!

I saw 'Letters to Juliet' tonight at a local historic theater that shows movies after they've left the cineplex. Tonight was the last night, and we counted over 175 women in the theater. Maybe 5 men.... It was a lovely movie, and the views of Italy were breathtaking. If you're looking for a truly romantic movie, this is it, and you can take your daughter. No sex.......it's all about love!
