Upon hearing of her mother's death, teenaged Pursy returns to her hometown to live in her mother's home, confronting her past. She is shocked to find

A misfit drama in the grand Southern (by way of Hollywood) tradition, A Love Song for Bobby Long takes its cue from Carson McCullers's The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter. Re-establishing his indie-cred, John Travolta adds Bobby Long to his gallery of colorful characters. Hobbled by an infected toe, the 50-something Bobby is a white-haired, unshaven, vodka-soaked mess. But he's also a former English professor, and the piles of books in his ramshackle house, and the authors he drunkenly quotes give him a wounded dignity. Just how wounded will be revealed over the course of this atmospheric tale of redemption and penance. Bobby lives with Lawson Pines (Gabriel Macht), his former teaching assistant who is writing a book about his mentor, a project deferred by drinking, sitting around with the locals, or engaging in quotation oneupsmanship. Scarlett Johansson (Lost in Translation, Ghost World) holds her own against Travolta ("You are such a shameless ham," she chastises the loquacious Bobby) as Pursy, the estranged daughter of Lorraine, a recently deceased singer-songwriter in whose house Bobby and Lawson reside. A battle of wills between the two men and the headstrong young girl gives way to the formation of a tentative family unit. Pursy agrees to return to high school if Bobby and Lawson quit drinking. There will be the expected revelations, recriminations, and dramatic confrontations, but what makes this Love Songresonate are the performances by a cast that rarely hits a false note. --Donald Liebenson

1 out of 5 stars Not the book   May 31, 2010

Anyone who has ever read Ronald Everett Capps' excellent novel will be disappointed with this movie. A LOVE SONG FOR BOBBY LONG almost completely changes the story and we end up with a Hallmark Channel piece of crap. Read the book. OFF MAGAZINE STREET is a classic.

5 out of 5 stars awseome entertainment...   December 19, 2009

This is one of my all time favorites. I've seen many movies in my day but this is something that hits close to the heart. One of my favorite John Travolta charaters and Scarlette, mmmmm, you were better than "down home country cookin." Great movie, great location, and one that will truly keep your interest.

3 out of 5 stars Tries too hard to be touching - and fails   December 6, 2009

A young, lost girl is thrown together with two intellectually gifted losers, in New Orleans. The losers are a an ex- prof and his ex- teaching assitant. In spite of their stellar crentials, they live the life of bums. The girl has to share a house with them - the house belonged to her mother, but the two gentlemen have been living in it.

So the situation it starts with has a lot of promise. I guess that for some watchers, the way it captures the beauty of the place strikes a chord. The music is great.

Somehow, the performances just don't ring true. I'm not sure if it's because of the script or something else. There's tension being built up about the incident which lead to the two elders becoming the way they are. When that incident is finally revealed, it's done in very disppointing way. The actors are definitely not hamming, but at many points, I got the feeling that the movie was contrived and even phony. There is a twist right in the end, but it didn't work very well either for me. Overall, I found it a bit disappointing, perhaps because I started watching it with very high expectations.

The Film is subtle and moving. The portrayal of the lives the characters posed against the city, New Orleans is beautiful. The film is well acted, well directed, well written and has a awesome soundtrack. One of my favorites by far. I am especially pleased with the acting of Gabriel Macht (Lawson Pines) amongst the expertise and grandeur of John and Scarlet.

I'm going to keep it short. This moving is amazing. One of the rare films that keeps your eyes locked to the screen. The writing, acting, sceneary, and soundtrack was amazing. One of the best Dramedys ever (Drama + Comedy Usually movies that lean more near drama but have their share of comedy)
