The dazzling Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, brought to lush life by the director of the original stage version, Joshua Logan. Set on a remote island during the Second World War, South Pacific tracks two parallel romances: one between a Navy nurse (Mitzi Gaynor) "as corny as Kansas in August" and a wealthy French plantation owner (Rossano Brazzi), the other between a young American officer (John Kerr) and a native girl (France Nuyen). The theme of interracial love was still daring in 1958, and so was director Logan's decision to overlay emotional moments with tinted filters--a technique that misfires as often as it hits. The comic relief tends to fall flat, and an overly spunky Mitzi Gaynor is a poor substitute for the stage original's Mary Martin. But the location scenery on the Hawaiian island of Kauai is gorgeous, and the songs are among the finest in the American musical catalog: "Some Enchanted Evening," "Younger than Springtime," "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair," "This Nearly Was Mine." That's Juanita Hall as the sly native trader Bloody Mary, singing the haunting tune that launched a thousand tiki bars, "Bali H'ai." Based on stories from James Michener's book Tales from the South Pacific. --Robert Horton

Product Description
Musical about an American navy nurse on a Pacific island during World War II who falls in love with a French planter, who becomes a war hero.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing picture   September 9, 2010
Anton Beat Riess (Buch, CH Switzerland)
Together with "The Robe" my first BluRay movie I bought in september 2009. The Blu-Ray is Codefree.

The picture quality is amazing and after I know already the 2 DVD releases (the single Disc and later the 2-Disc-Edition) its really a new experience.
The Blu-Ray contains both versions: the theatrical release and the longer "Roadshow".

Controversal had been in the 50s the relationship between Liat and Lt. Cable. For today - of course, not longer shocking.

Bonus-Features:

The Audio-Commentaries had been very interesting. For Trivia Fans - there is a gossip that Joan Fontaine (Alfred Hitchcock's "Rebecca") can be see as an extra when Lt. Cable come the first time to the Island.

In few scenes of "Bloody Mary" can be seen also: Ed Fury, Ken Clark.

5 out of 5 stars One of the BEST   August 19, 2010

"South Pacific" is one of the best musical ever made and this film does it justice.
It tells the stories behind many wars, yet is very personal. The music is hypnotic and the lyrics profound. In this production, the performers do an amazing job and the cinematography is awesome. It's a classic that will be a treasured addition to anyone's film collection.

I was just a (very) little girl when we went to a "drive in" and saw this movie.

I have never forgotten it.

I was so glad to see this out on DVD and bought it immediately, but am just now getting around to reviewing it. However, I think I will review it from my five year old eyes, because this movie helped shaped me into the person I am today.

In 1958 ('59 when we watched it)I wasn't exposed to many races of people, but I was exposed to racism, in the things grown ups would say at parties, or children would parrot on playgrounds. I hadn't formed any opinions on it, and, until this movie, I had never be exposed to "the other side" of the argument.

As a little girl, I loved Bloody Mary's daughter, and the "Happy Talk" scene in the beautiful water slide and pool of what I now know to be Kauai. My siblings and I would sing that song all the time, since my mother bought us the album. But the song I remember the most, out of the amazing score? When the young soldier and nurse sing, "You have to be taught to hate and fear, it has to be drummed in your dear little ear."

It made such an impression on me, and I have never, ever, forgotten the power of the songs in this show. Did the situation between the young soldier and Bloody Mary's daughter change me forever? Yes. It did. I have never forgotten those lessons, and my "opinions" on race have remained the same ever since.

So for me, this movie was simply a gift. Who knows what I would have grown up to be like, or how many years it might have taken had I not been very aware of what was trying to be "drummed into my dear little ear" and resisted it?

There are so many wonderful things about this movie, my sister's favorite is still the "Honeybun" show, my mom's was "wash that man right out of my hair" and I loved the scenes shot at the old Hanalei plantation where Nellie danced with the Frenchman.

It's lovely.
It's powerful.
It should be in every video collection.

It's a family movie with powerful messages, and yes, your children WILL get it, while enjoying the wonderful songs.

I enjoyed the movie very much. It would be helpful to me if you would specify if your DVD's are
close-captioned.

thanks
