Jane Austen fans will delight in the sumptuous production design and first-rate acting in the 2007 Masterpiece Theatre version of Persuasion. Sally Hawkins is controlled and moving as Anne Elliot, the quietly heartbroken but sensible heroine who was "persuaded" (read: forced) to turn away her true love but still carries an unseen torch for him. Hawkins's performance is genteel yet steely, and the quiet strength of the entire production. Hawkins looks alternately quietly lovely and sadly pinched--as one might expect the long frustrated Anne to look.

Other highlights include a post-Buffy Anthony Head, as Anne's clueless, blustery father, Sir Walter. Head gets to turn on his deft comic talent here in ways most American audiences have not yet seen him; he's clearly enjoying himself immensely, blustering about "my shrubberies" and other trivial affairs. The cinematography is lush (several breathtaking tracking shots are used, especially early on), as are the period costumes. The production was filmed exclusively on location, and the reality of the sets enforces the story.

Some fans may prefer the 1995 Amanda Root version, for the casting of Ciaran Hinds as Capt. Wentworth, but this later effort is a worthy entry in the Austen film oeuvre--and Rupert Penry-Jones is a dreamboat in his own right. As the wistful Anne says, on behalf of all women, "We do not forget you, so soon as you forget us." --A.T. Hurley

5 out of 5 stars Love It   July 25, 2010

Fantastic movie! I have seen many different versions of this movie and I think this version is the best! I have watched it over and over.

5 out of 5 stars my review   July 12, 2010

I liked this version of Persuasion much better. The characters of both the leads have been very nicely protrayed and also this is clear adaptation of the story as in Jane Austen version. I loved the nuances between Anne and Captain much to my delight.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely Adaption   July 10, 2010
Hache
This is by far my favorite adaption of Persuasion. I enjoyed the 1996 adaption, but found it a little lacking in spirit. I know, I know, this is a period film and outbursts of emotions were frowned upon in the regency era, etc., but in order to translate a novel written with such subtlety to film it is sometimes necessary to pump up the emotional undertones, or else one ends up with quite the dull movie. There are a few changes to the original story, but it all works nicely in the film, and the spirit of the original story is still there. This adaption has it's flaws, of course- the cheesy staring into the camera, the running, and the piranha like kiss at the end- but somehow it all still works quite nicely, mostly due to the excellent acting done by Sally Hawkins and the oh-so-attractive Rupert Penry-Jones. Overall I highly recommend this film, and can only advise any Jane Austen aficionado to look past it's differences from the novel and enjoy it for what it is.

5 out of 5 stars Anne's Diary Entry   June 29, 2010

Does anyone know what Anne is writing in her diary at the end of the movie?

5 out of 5 stars Perfect story, great acting, music, and cinematography   June 26, 2010
Home Away From Home (San Diego, CA)
Perfect story about waiting and second chances. Screenplay as good as the Amada Root version, although a bit different in places. Wonderful scenery and ambiance. Moving portrayal of love thwarted, then ultimately regained. Searing vision of stifling social mores of another era. Beautiful cinematography and incorporation of music in all the right places. He's gorgeous; she's charming. What's not to like?
