Product Description A poor Czech immigrant and a down-on-his-luck Irish musician meet by chance on the streets of Dublin and start writing music together.
Amazon.com Winner of the World Audience Award at Sundance, Once starts out as a small-scale romance, like Before Sunrise, before arriving somewhere unexpected. An Irish busker (Glen Hansard, the Frames and The Commitments) meets a Czech flower seller (Markéta Irglová) while singing on the streets of Dublin. (In the credits, they're listed as Guy and Girl.) She likes what she hears and lets him know. Turns out she's a musician, too. They work on a few songs together and a friendship is forged. She lives with her widowed mother, who doesn't speak English. He lives with his widowed father, who owns a repair shop. Since he broke up with his girlfriend, the guy has been drifting, unable and unwilling to get his life in order. The girl encourages him to pursue a record deal, and the guy emerges from his funk. Then he makes a move on the girl, who rejects his advances. He's confused, but as he comes to find, there's a reason she's keeping her distance. Though Once is filled with appealing folk-pop by Hansard and Irglová (released on CD as The Swell Season), the movie isn't a traditional musical, but rather a more optimistic Brief Encounter. Filmmaker John Carney, Hansard's former bandmate, captures the real city--in all its affluence and poverty--rather than the picture postcard version. His beautifully shot film serves as a heartfelt ballad about all the underclass Guys and Girls swept aside amidst Ireland's economic miracle. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Excellent! August 22, 2010 amazon Incredible music and beautiful story. One of the best films I've seen in a long time.
Great Movie...Great Amazon seller August 18, 2010 Data Dad (Palo Alto, CA) Loved the movie for most of the same reasons so many others have detailed. Got the DVD because I wanted the extras, the commentaries, etc. And this review is about the seller: RainyDayEntertainment, Just-4-Josh as I ordered 7/26, it was postmarked 7/27 and I got it across the country 7/29. Wow, that's service. I've ordered items from other Amazon resellers and have waited a couple of weeks, and sometimes it never arrives (they send a refund, but I wanted the item!). I will order DVD's from RainyDayEntertainment again!!
Sticks with you August 4, 2010 O'Broandin (Overland Park, KS) All of these one star reviews must be into Transformers or A-Team movies. This movie is real from start to finish. So much background to the filming, the truth in character for both Guy and Girl.
You will not forget the feeling of this movie. Could not recommend more.
Horrendous Production Values Ruins a Great Story April 1, 2010 Jeff Kimble (Savannah, GA) 1 out of 7 found this review helpful
Once is an interesting movie. I say that because, honestly, there's a strong storyline here that could be enjoyed. It's unique, has a great and very original soundtrack, and comes off as a quirky love story told through music.
Now the bad news. Once has, quite literally, the worst production values I have seen. Worse yet, it managed to slip into mass distribution with them. The lighting is absolutely terrible and there's even a scene where you can see the grip and operator's shadow. The audio quality sounds like an on board microphone and there are shadows all over the place. I have honestly seen better home movies. Honestly.
It's kind of a catch 22. I'm sure the production values were looked over BECAUSE of the story but it's like trying to pass off a crayon stick figure as a Picasso. You don't need a budget to make a great movie. But you at least need SOME level of know how, know where to put your lights, know how to use mics, etc. This truly made the movie unwatchable.
More than Once March 17, 2010 Samuel Frausto (Huntington Beach) Great movie! I watched "Once" in the theatre when it first came out, and loved it so much, that I told everyone I knew back then who could really appreciate a smart movie, to see it. Now I own it can see it and share it whenever I want.
